Brushing your pets teeth is much like training your pet. It takes time for your pet to get use to the idea and to understand what is expected of them. If done with patience and introduced properly most pets will enjoy the extra attention they receive from it on a daily bases.
It is important to introduce a brushing program to pets gradually. Avoid over-restraining and keep brushing sessions short and positive. Lots of praise will reassure your pet throughout the process.
Cats and small dogs can be held on your lap. Dip your finger in beef bouillon, juice from tuna or similar product. Rub the soaked finger gently over the pets teeth letting them get use to the idea of you having something in there mouth.
Gradually, introduce gauze or wash cloth over your finger and gently scrub the teeth in a circular motion.
Finally, you can introduce a soft toothbrush designed for pets. Finger brushes seem to work well, other special pet toothbrushes are also available (see our in store display, or our list of products on line). Don't use toothpaste designed for people because it could upset the animal's stomach.
There are many products available to help reduce plaque and tarter buildup, but none of them are a substitute to good brushing. After all if you ate a few specially designed biscuits every day but did not brush your teeth, how do you think you teeth would look.
